African Book Reviews

Below are a couple of reviews of books I have read in the past that have changed my outlook on life in some way and hope they may inspire some of you. Some of these books are political commentaries, some are social commentaries, some are just fun reads.

Mukiwa by Peter Godwin.
I have also read When a Crocodile eats the Sun and The Fear, but I think this original is his best work, although I urge you to try them all. Peter grew up in the beautiful Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) and this book captures some of the magic all African children experience growing up on this amazing continent.

Don't Lets go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller.
Simarly to Mukiwa this is a tale of growing up in the Eastern Highlands during a time of war but it too captures the imagination and the powerful pull of Zimbabwe to all who have known her at her greatest and worst.

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.
A novel this time this is a powerful tale of an individual using his head to conquer his own weaknesses, it is the story of a young white boy of English heritage growing up in a deeply racist Afrikaans community and his own triumphs and failures along to way. Along with it's sequel Tandia it is one of the most moving novels ever written.

The Part Time War by Rod Wells.
Stories about what it was like to be a driver on call up during the Rhodesian War.

Blood Sweat and Lions by David Lemon.
Something a little more cheerful this is the story of a man walking alone through the Zimbabwean bush from Kariba to Binga. An inspiring story even if he must be a nutter.
he also has a Blog at http://elephantlemon.com/ which contains the unpublished story of him rowing the length of Kariba and back on a kayak.

Bitter Harvest the Great Betrayal by Ian Douglas Smith.
Was he a great statesman or just a farmer, the combined autobiographies of the late Ian Douglas Smith. He declared UDI and led a nation in a time of war, you certainly can't say he didn't have balls.

Rainbows End by Lauren St John.
Another Story of a childhood growing up in war torn Rhodesia, you might have guessed that I like these sort of books, and that is almost true except that I hate them but yet find myself compelled to read them through some sort of twisted I need to understand my people kink, anyway this is a good one.

I've go loads of others that I will add to this list in due course.

I'd also welcome any suggestions you may have for stuff I've either forgotten or may not have read yet.

Disgusted

I am ashamed to be a resident of Croydon, for years my friends family and I have joked about what a scummy area we live in. The events of the past twenty four hours have proved how accurate that assesment is.

My heart goes out to all of those individuals and businesses affected by the mindless violence and total lack of decorum expressed by the boroughs youths.

They have in one night managed to destroy beautiful buildings that have stood for over one hundred years surviving the bombings of two world wars and for what.

There does not appear to be any political agenda behind these disgusting scenes other than every oik and scumbag being out to get what they can for themselves.

I condemn them all and hope that they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law or prefferably their heads are stuck on a pike on Tower Bridge as a reminder to future oiks that being a dickhead is innexcusable.

I state here publically that if my children were ever to dare to engage in this sort of behaviour I would flog them and hand them into the local police station for immediate retribution. (he's only eighteen months old and the other one is yet to be born)

Parents reign in your Oiks and let us rebuild our borough if not our sense of community.

I think I've ranted enough now although I could go on.

Current Book Reviews

Here I will publish reviews of books that I have recently read plus occasionally some older ones that I feel are worth a mention. I'll try and come up with a rating system and where available I will provide links to buy them from Amazon.

My current read is "The Infidel by Bob Shepherd, he's a new author to me but I understand he's another ex SAS take on half the worlds terrorist type like Andy Macnab, Chris Ryan etc. I'll let you know how it goes.
Now that I finished it, I can highly recomend it, great cliff hanger ending, keeps up the pace throughout, could easily be the next Chris Ryan, Andy Mcnab etc etc...

I have just finished off The Hunter by Tom Wood.
I've found it thoroughly readable although a little thin on the plot, read it if you like the Jason Bourne books 3 assasins out of 5

Honesty

As the primary focus of this blog is for me to rant and praise, I have taken the decision to include some advertising, I will be adding amazon links to products that I approve of and both Amazon and adsense will be creating targeted ads based on the content of my blog.

Of course I'd appreciate if you'd click on some of these links and try some of the products I recomend for your selves but please don't feel obliged to do so.

Please keep in touch with me and feel free to shout or complain if you feel that I am becoming too comercialised. I may even listen to you if you buy something via the site.

these adverts will look something like this one for Cooked in Africa a fantastic cook book by Justin Bonello

If there is something out there on Amazon that you are thinking of buying then please get in touch and I will see if I can offer you a linkthrough from here.

The Wedding of the year

Just a quick note to congratulate the happiest couple of the year Mr and Mr Smith-Thomas you both looked fantastic and extatically happy. Le Compte looked incredibly proud and Clare and Kylie were fantastic. Thank you sooo much for sharing your special day with me, Mrs Bunny Chow and the Monkey Boy.

Here's wishing all the best to you both for a long and prosperous future.

And if any of my readers are in need of some seriously talented entertainment for their event they could do a lot worse than hiring http://www.claretyndall.co.uk/

Mexican Made Easy

We have a bit of a love hate relationship with Chiquito's on the Purley Way, a couple of years ago we had a nightmare meal there that took nearly three hours and we swore them off for good.

But becoming parents changed that for us a couple of months back when we were tempted back by their childrens menu and the fact that they had free tables when we had to wait for a table elsewhere.

What a difference we thought, great food, great service, well priced, we'll come again.

And so a couple of months later we gave them another shot, had another great meal, Waiters stopping regularly to check up on us, managers playing with Monkey Boy, and a bill of less than £50.

So we come round to attempt number three.

Firstly they forgot to bring over our high chair, annoying but easily done and quickly rectified.

Food and drinks ordered, we had to ask for the free Tortilla chips which Monkey boy loves and half of them were undercooked and like chewing rubber.

Starters arrived, all still going fairly smoothly, about half way through our starters the waitress comes over and says our mains are ready and would we like them now. But we haven't finished our starters we quip, I know but I thought you'd be quicker, I can always keep them on hold she says, but then they'll be cold we say, yes she says.

Still by this stage we've had our starters for four minutes rather than two and we're nearly through them so tell her to bring them out even though we're less than impressed. My Chilli Dog was a little bready but fine. But Mrs Bunny Chows Enchilada's had obviously been ready since sometime before the starters. They were also ridiculous, somewhere between the thickness of a pen an a thin cigar, I couldn't have got my baby finger in one never mind the described chilli con queso, ancho-chilli-tomato sauce and spiced chicken. The bed of rice these two cigars were sitting on had also been dried out to the point where it had all stuck together and formed a crispy crust.

By now even less than impressed we began the process of trying to track down anyone resembling a manager but even a member of the waiting team would have been useful, after about fifteen minutes (admittedly interupted by having to change Monkey Boy's Nappy) we managed to attract the attention of a Manager looking lady who promissed to be right with us. Again I have to confess she was carrying stuff at the time so instant service from her wasn't to be necesarily expected.

About ten further minutes later a separate manager arrived with our original waitress in tow. I by this stage had almost finished my main while Mrs Bunny Chow had been unable to even start hers. She queried the abomination in front of her whilst I held my own council for fear of being unecesarilly rude. He made some vague attempts to justify the shocking quality of the dish in front of us but did agree relatively quickly that because this much was what their Enchilada's are supposed to be like. Mrs Bunny Chow could order something else from the menu.

She then ordered something called a Border Wrap assuming that as it was essentially a posh sandwich it would arrive relatively quickly and us having eaten our mains separately would not have been the end of the world.

You will note that by this stage I've made no mention of anyone having cleared any plates or us ordering more drinks, this is because we were not offered the opportunity to order more drinks and no one had cleared the plates from our starters or mains.

Mrs Bunny Chow's special sandwich took a further thirty plus minutes to arrive whilst I ammused myself by creating elaborate piles of crockery and empty glasses and origami piramids to sit on top of these items even making loud clattering noises when one of these piles collapsed. Still they kept me ammused while we waited so probably a good thing no one bothered to take them away from me.

At one point Ms Surly our ever helpful and attentive waitress indicated that Mrs Bunny Chows main course would be with her in two minutes, it took a further fifteen from that point but when it did eventually arrive she was pleasantly surprised that it was actually very nice and didn't appear to taste of chefs bogeys either.

I continued to amuse myself with my crockery stacking while she ate while Monkey Boy threw bits of bread and sausage about the place.

When Mrs Bunny Chow finnished her meal I immediately added her crockery to my pile which was great fun as things were even more precarious than before I had managed to collapse my stack. This kept me quiet whilst Mrs Bunny Chow tried to track down a member of waiting staff to order the dessert from the set menu we had ordered Monkey Boy's meal from. He didn't need or want the dessert  of course but by this stage we had been there for over two hours and I was getting tired and fractious and Mrs Bunny Chow thought the best way of shutting me up was probably to feed me something sugary meant for my son.

So after eventually managing to request the Childrens Warm Chocolate Brownie, I continued to play with my elaborate stack of crockery and empty glasses whilst quietly bemoaning my thirst. Mrs Bunny Chow muttered sweet loving threats along the nature of it's ok Mr Bunny Chow but if you get out of that seat and go and drag the manageress over by her hair I will divorce you. Believing every word of it I mumbled quietly for myself for the remaining ten minutes before Ms Surly (remember her, I'd nearly forgotten) returned to inform us that they had run out of Chocolate Brownies but she could go and check in the freezer (why she hadn't done that before she came out I don't know) but we could order something else if we preferred.

Begining to get a wind up I at this point said as politely and sweetly as I could muster, that no we would not be requiring a dessert any longer but would like very much to be brought a bill appropriate to the service and meal we had just had. I would have continued further explaining the levels of distaste I had for Ms Surly and the meal they had just served but Mrs Bunny Chow fixed me with a glare that would have killed a lesser man than I so I backed down and wen't back to playing with my crockery and empty glasses.

Ms Surly tottered off to chat with the manager and then clean some tables or apply some make up or something else that did not consist of bringing our bill before after a further fifteen minutes and now seven minutes shy three hours of having entered the establishment. Ms Surly and the original Mr Manager two came over with the bill having deigned to lop off twenty percent in advance.

Left to my own devices I would have demanded more but again Mrs Bunny Chow fixed me with that special Stare of hers.

I don't know how many of you dear readers have small children of for that matter childish husbands but taking three hours over a mediocre meal on a school night is not a luxury we are often afforded. To have been given a special pile of crockery and glasses of varying shapes and sizes to play with too, I could not have been more delighted.

I cannot wait for our next adventure at Chiquito's.

It's not all doom and gloom here are some products that I love

My Fuji HS20EXR it's an amazing camera for a keen amateur like me. See the brilliant review on http://www.safari-guide.co.uk/fujifilm-finepix-hs20exr-digital-camera-review.php

My Amazon Kindle. I love books I own thousands of them but for convenience it's a reading experience second to none except maybe a real book but then you'd have to lug it about and be stuck once you finished it miles from home. Seemless integration with the iPhone and PC apps (there is one for Android too) is also a huge bonus.

My iPhone. I know the android fans out there will rant on and on but for me personally I prefer the interface even if Android has products out there that are technically superior Sense just doesn't float my boat. I have nothing against Android they make some fine products they're just not for me.

My Courtney Boots. They originally cost my father somewhere in the region of £500gpb but that was 14 years ago now and I've walked literally thousands of miles in them. Mine are the original Courtney model with elephant, buffalo and giraffe hides with Dunlop tyre tread soles. They are currently back at the factory in Bulawayo being refurbished (every stitch redone and new soles) a service for which they are charging only £36gpb. So whilst they may sound expensive they last forever and you can't say that about much these days. They're also a lot cheaper than they used to be available in the UK from around £200. All be it with only buffalo hide now available. see www.courteneyboot.com/ for global suppliers or www.westleyrichards.co.uk/Shop/Courteney-Boots if you're in the UK.

My Tag Heuer Aquaracer. I mentioned in my introduction that we had been burgled this year and of the items stolen this included my grandfathers 50's vintage Omega Seamaster and Sharon's Fathers Pierre Cardin watch. More Than insurance although a little slow did not quibble any of our claim and very kindly arranged Vouchers for us to use in Earnest Jones or H Samuel (they would have paid out cash but at a lower value, I assume they get a kick back and this is fair enough) After much deliberation I decided that rather than purchase another Omega Seamaster that I would split the future family heirloom and on the advice of the excellent staff in Croydon's branch of Ernest Jones chose a lovely stylish but simple Tag Heuer Aquaracer.
Tag Heuer Aquaracer Mens Watch WAF1110.BA0800

My Raymond Weil Maestro 2827. This less well known swiss manufacturer has only been in business for 40 odd years a smidge in comparison to the history of Heuer but I couldn't resist the elegant simplicity of this watch with it's open balance wheel and the fact that it actually uses the same ETA (part of the Swatch Group) designed movement as the Tag convinced me to part with the other half of the insurance payout.

My Le Crueset cookwear. I have a large and a small frying pan, griddle, and small pot. There is no reason to believe that my children will not inherit these along with the above watches.

My Swiss Army knife, my personal preferance is for the climber model which I feel has the best combination of small portable size and having enough tools to be useful every day. You will very rarely find me without it in my pocket, in fact flights will be about the only time.

I will periodically add more items to this list as I think of them

my latest luck

As I've mentioned in some of my background info Mrs Bunny Chow is currently carrying our second son and as a sensible and practical woman, unlike any other woman I've ever known is only in possession of one pair of comfortable shoes. Her current pair purchased almost two years ago now are absolutely falling to pieces.

Being the sweet, thoughtful and caring husband I am, I armed myself with her shoe size and ordered a pair of trainers for her from Amazon, a company who I would wholeheartedly recommend as the first place to look for just about anything you fancy, need it or not they probably have several versions of it at sensible prices.

I've been spending far too much of my expendable and not so expendable income with them for years with very few issues along the way.

The first pair I ordered arrived at my place of work within the usual 24 hours (I'm a Prime Subscriber), unfortunately due to either the vagaries of shoe sizing between manufacturers or Mrs Bunny Chows pregnant feet they were a tiny bit too small. Not a problem, Amazon have an excellent returns scheme so I returned pair one, (actually I have gotten as far as printing the returns label and the box is still sitting in front of me) and ordered the next size up expecting them to arrive as normal by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

When they hadn't arrived on Tuesday I discovered through Amazon's tracking service that they had attempted delivery but been unable to locate my office. Confused but still understanding I rang the offices of HDNL on the difficult to track down number of 0870 154 5400. This masquerades as an automated service but someone will eventually answer. The young lady I spoke to was indifferent to the point of rudeness but explained to me that they had been unable to make sense of our address and hadn't thought to phone me for instructions or perhaps just drive down the major road on which my office is located looking for a giant aircraft hanger with big bold Germanic signs on the side of it and shiny colourful cars advertising the fact that this is indeed a Car Dealership.

I don't believe for a minute that they did in fact attempt delivery but none the less I remained patient after receiving assurances that they would deliver the following day (Wednesday) and I even gave them directions that even a moron could follow and my contact number should these prove to be too difficult. By Wednesday afternoon Amazon's tracking service still indicated that my parcel was still in their Mitcham depot. I called the hard to find number of 0870 154 5400 and asked to speak to a manager when I was told that redelivery had not been requested. When a manager eventually decided to make herself available she said that she was unsure why redelivery was not scheduled and could offer no further light on why their driver had been unable to locate our huge dealership. She said that she would request delivery for Thursday instead. I expressed my distaste at this lack of service and expressed my extreme disappointment, even going as far as explaining about Mrs Bunny Chows dying trainers who's soles are now barely hanging on.

Mrs Manager was unsympathetic but on my insistence she agreed to try and track down the parcel and get it in a truck that afternoon. She would call me back once she was sure if this was possible.

To her credit she did indeed call me back about an hour later with reassurance that my parcel was on a truck and would be with me by the end of the day.

Needless to say by Thursday morning , nothing, nout, nada, so back on the phone to the irritating contact centre of HDNL. The first two jobsworths I spoke to point blank refused to put me through to a supervisor saying that it was against company policy for them to even enquire of their supervisors whether they could come to the phone and eventually hung up on me without even putting me on hold or attempting to ask their supervisors to speak with me. They really were skilled in obstinance a skill that I'm sure will get them far in life. Not once did either of them ask me what my complaint was regarding or see if they could attempt to appease me themselves.

My third call was cut off before I even got to speak to someone, but call four bore some fruit in that I managed to get a manager to come to the phone. She of course denied that it was company policy for supervisors to speak to members of the public or that their staff were not permitted to seek the assistance of a supervisor.

She promised to look into where my parcel was and ensure it was out for delivery the following day (Friday now) again I expressed my extreme displeasure so with some reluctance yet another HDNL manager agreed to try and track down my parcel and ensure it went out for delivery the same day.

At this point I also contacted Amazon directly, they were great, they offered to cancel the order and refund me, the offered to send a different colour (the same were out of stock now) and when I declined these options agreed to also chase HDNL directly. Amazon called me back within the hour to say that my order had been loaded on a van at 11:36 and was now out for delivery.

Nothing........

This morning I have been in contact with Amazon directly again as their tracking page never updated overnight from out for delivery.

They chased HDNL on my behalf and were told that the driver had attempted delivery at 17:35 last night but the office was closed. We are officially open till 18:00 and there is normally someone about till closer to 7pm.

They have sent out the parcel on yet another van earlier today apparently so that they will get to the office before we close.

I wait with bated breath

It's now nearly 15:00 on Friday the 5th, still no delivery.

The temptation to shout and lose my temper is all encompassing, but I started this Blog in order to give me free reign over my rants without the need to raise my blood pressure.

I will keep you posted dear readers

Finally a battered and filthy box was delivered at just after 17:00, glad it only contained shoes and not something especially valuable or breakable.

Mr Bunny Chow

Got to start somewhere

I'm starting this blog because I've had a fantastic couple of years but some of the worst luck you could possibly imagine. I wanted somewhere to be able to express my hatred and distaste of terrible and shocking customer service without boring and annoying my friends and family senseless any longer.

My intention is to be scrupulously honest though and I will give credit where is due, praise products and services I love. Give the subjects of my ranting a fair and even chance to respond, change my mind, refute my claims and accusations or improve their service and I'll let you the reader know.

So a little background.

In the past couple of years, Mrs Bunny Chow and I have gotten married become parents, bought a modest home, furnished it with love, a stupid but very sweet staffie called Bunny Chow and two indifferent cats who we love anyway.

Our first son is the light of my life and I can't wait for his little brother to be born in a couple of weeks time.

We've had appalling experiences with insurance companies, of the vehicular and buildings variety, we've had cowboy builders, used big companies to install and reinstall bathrooms, we've been burgled, Mrs Bunny Chow has lost both her parents, we've tried and failed to sell our modest little home for a slightly less modest and more family oriented one because of the incompetence of our estate agents.

As I say we've been very unlucky.

So my intention for now is to try and move forward whilst documenting some of the issues we have had and the mistakes we and others have made in the hope that one or two of you out there in the cyber world can benefit from my hindsight.

I don't intend for now to drag up any of the past complaints or how we eventually resolved them but I urge each and every one of you to do your own research before making the decision to invest your hard earned money in any of the following list of organisations that I have had run ins with in the past couple of years and believe to be rotten beyond redemption.

B&Q
Admiral Car Insurance
Aviva Home Insurance
Wallis Carpentry
ROK
HDNL
British Telecom
Capital One
The Zimbabwean Government

The list is by no means exhaustive and I'm sure that there are individuals within these organisations who are excellent at what they do and my distaste is not aimed at them personally but the culture in which their organisations are run.

You see what gets my goat more than anything else is a lack of individual pride and ownership of the customers issues, complaints and gripes. I know that I am a difficult customer, I am a customer service and sales professional and I expect the businesses that I give my money to, to provide me with a level of service and pride that they would be willing and proud to receive themselves. I expect them to invest in their staffs happiness and morale so that their staff actually care about the end customer the little man on the street, me, my family and friends.

I appreciate that times are tough and there has to be a bottom line and every business needs to scrimp to make the maximum profit but I don't believe for one minute that the way for these mostly large, swollen and faceless corporations to stay in business is to forget the customers who in the grand scheme of things don't bring a huge amount of revenue into their coffers, but there are a lot of us and if they upset us all as individuals then where will their once thriving businesses end up.

But enough of my doom and gloom for now I want to wholeheartedly recommend a few companies who I feel are the antithesis of my prior ranting. These organisations deserve to grow, they want you to come back and spend more money with them so they invest their time and often money in ensuring you keep bringing your personal as well as recommended business back to their door.

www.myalldesigns.com/ - a web design company with big talent and big ambitions

Timpsons - they fixed my boots and then asked for a donation in their charity box

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge - an idyllic spot on Lake Kariba in beautiful Zimbabwe. www.bumihills.com

The Courtney Boot Company - manufactures of expensive but extremely hard wearing footwear  www.courteneyboot.com/

So I'll sign off for now with my introductions, initial mini rant and praise done but look forward to hearing of your thoughts and experiences of both terrible and great service.
